Recipe Kits: Things to Know

Our recipe packs come in single batch (23L) or double batch (46L) versions with all the necessary grain, hops and yeast for your brew, with hop amounts rounded up to the nearest 50g.  You can either follow the recipe instructions on the product page, follow the recipe sheet attached to your order, or follow the Brewfather / Grainfather link to match the recipe to your system.

Grain Milling:
Our recipes are milled using Ss Brewtech Grain Mills to the exact spec and gap for the malts required in each recipe and the crush setting you’ve selected. For recirculating all-in-one systems like the Grainfather or Brewzilla, we recommend the COARSE crush option. For Brew In A Bag brewers, please select a FINE crush. Our recipes are milled and packaged fresh to order meaning you get the freshest ingredients every time.

Rice Hulls and Adjuncts:
Some of our recipes will include Rice Hulls as an optional extra. This is mainly to improve recirculation and run-off for recipes heavy in wheat, oats, or other flaked adjuncts. Rice Hulls will not alter the flavour of your beer but are merely there as a process aide. Some recipes may include adjuncts like Orange Peel or Lactose. Please consult the recipe for the recommended dosage amount, but by all means increase or decrease how much you use on brew day based on your own personal taste!

Hopstands and Whirlpool Hops:
Many of our recipes refer to a “Hopstand” addition. Hopstands are hops added AFTER the boil has finished, for a set amount of time (usually 15 minutes). The aim of a hopstand is to unlock maximum aroma from the hops without too much bitterness. If a recipe suggests a hopstand at a set temperature, chill your wort down to this temperature before adding your hopstand hops, or wait for your wort to drop to the desired temperature. If you give your wort a stir in a circular motion (whirlpool), you will find this drops the temperature quicker.

Ingredient Substitution:
In extremely rare cases where an ingredient is unavailable, we will provide a suitable substitute to an equal or greater value and with similar characteristics.

Efficiency and Equipment Profiles:
By default our recipe volumes are designed for a Grainfather G30 so be sure to adjust your equipment profile in Brewfather as required to give you accurate water volumes for the mash and sparge. BIAB brewers can use the “total water” on the recipe sheet as a guide. Mash and Sparge water volumes will vary depending on your brewing system, but our new recipe sheets will give water volumes for most popular brewing systems.

Water Profiles / Water Treatment:
Often our recipes and recipe sheets will suggest a target water profile with mineral additions. These additions are based on a brew using Reverse Osmosis filtered water. If you’re using tap water for brewing, we recommend instead treating your water with Potassium Metabisulphite, which will eliminate both chlorine and chloramine. If you’re using tap water and wish to replicate a water profile in your recipe, you will first need to get a water report from your utility provider. We can then help you work out which mineral additions you may want to add. In most cases, Brisbane tap water is lacking in sulphate, which can be added to your brewing water using Calcium Sulphate (Gypsum) or Magnesium Sulphate (Epsom Salts).

We also sell and refill Reverse Osmosis water in store.

Yeast Selection:
Please ensure you select additional packs of yeast if required in your recipe (eg. for double batches, strong beers and lagers). Brewers comfortable with making yeast starters may wish to choose a single yeast sachet, but for stronger beers (>1.050 SG) and lagers it is our recommendation to select 2 packets or more. You can adjust your yeast selection on the recipe page.

Cheers and Hoppy Brewing!
